In the distant past the cycads flourished with a peak in the Mesozoic Era, about 150 million years ago. The today living cycads are only a small group of what they once were: 11 genra with 10 subspecies and about 300 species. In habitat they're found in the tropical, subtropical and warm temperate regions. Central America leads with the greatest diversity in cycad species. Cycas is the most widely distributed genus. Cycads, along with palms, tree ferns and cordylines are very popular subjects for cultivation. Cycad collectors and enthusiasts will go to great lengths in their search for rare specimens. In general, rare species and/or specimens are expensive. Cycads are also excellent subjects for landscapers whilst many species make very decorative container plants and are well suited for indoor use. An important note goes to the conservation status of certain cycad species. Some species are now extinct in the wild and many others reduced to the point where natural reproduction is no longer possible. The regular propagation of seedlings from cultivated plants is one easy way in which all enthusiasts can take an active role in the conservation of these unique plants. |
